ANIMAFEST SCANNER VIII

Symposium for Contemporary Animation Studies

Animafest Scanner VIII

8.-9. Juni 2021

Kino Tuškanac, Tuškanac 1

TUESDAY – WEDNESDAY: 10:00 – 17:00 h

In English, open to public.

As the worldwide Animation Studies are rapidly growing and evolving in recent years, catching up with the increasing field of animated films, Animafest Scanner symposium is again at the frontline of the discourse and the interaction of theoretical and practical approaches to animation. The eighth edition of the Symposium for Contemporary Animation Animafest Scanner VIII aims again to create synergy of theoretical and practical discourses, and stimulate exchange between filmmakers and scholars.

The symposium is held in association with the World Festival of Animated Film – Animafest Zagreb. Over the course of its forty-ninth-year history, the festival has given a stage to different animation forms and formats in competition and non-competition environments, presenting a worldwide selection of auteur, experimental and mainstream animated films in various programs.
The speakers will focus on the following subjects: Animation and the Living: How Animated Films Can Invite Us to Rethink Our Relationship with Biodiversity, Animation in Public Spaces, Depicting Emotions, Scriptwriting in Animation.

This year’s keynote speaker is the recipient of the Animafest Zagreb Award for Outstanding Contribution to Animation Studies for 2021, culture and film scholar and animation critic and historian Xavier Kawa-Topor. He uses his broad knowledge of humanities to create solid foundations in studying moving images, with animation bearing a special significance. This is evident from the fact that he established the French-speaking NEF Animation professional platform in 2015, as well as from diverse practical activities in supporting contemporary and classic animation. Topor’s festival and other programmes, the books he wrote or edited on animation history (individually or in association with experts such as Philippe Moins, Ilan Nguyen and Jean Rubak), made an exceptional contribution to the knowledge, studying and promotion of Japanese animation and artists like Hayao Miyazaki, Koji Yamamura, Takashi Yamazaki or Isao Takahata, and he also strived to explore the masterpieces of many other filmmakers, like Ladislas Starevich, René Laloux or Michael Dudok de Wit. All these successes, as well as articles and essays on animation published in leading professional magazines, such as Blink Blank (as one of the founding editors), serve to illustrate Topor’s skill in synthesis just as much as his exploratory zeal, individual creativity and inclination to team work in promoting animation. With presenting and analysing animation, often especially bearing in mind the specifics of younger audiences, Topor has made an immense educational effect, helping Western Europe and the entire global community of animation lovers to define the canons of the most important achievements in this art. On the other hand, he never forgot to acknowledge contemporary values, which made him one of the most significant animation scholars worldwide. (Nikica Gilić)

Historical and current trends, numerous perspectives, new findings in the fast-growing field of animation studies, paired with exciting speakers – all this and more awaits you at the Animafest Scanner VIII symposium, in the context of screenings and other events organised by Animafest 2021.
