Matea Kovač & Ana Maria Maravić: OPPORTUNE MOMENT

Wie können wir uns den entscheidenden Moment, den Opportune Moment, vorstellen? In der griechischen Mythologie steht Kairos – der Gott des richtigen Augenblicks – für jenen flüchtigen Punkt in der Zeit, in dem Veränderung möglich wird. Wir stellen ihn uns meist als etwas Positives vor. Doch was kann ein solcher Moment wirklich bedeuten?

Im Animationsfilm Y lotet Matea Kovač die feine Grenze zwischen Verbindung und Trennung aus – und die Erkenntnis, dass etwas enden muss, um das eigene Ich zu schützen. Bildhauerin Ana Maria Maravić zeigt Kairos mit großen Füßen für Schnelligkeit und einem verspielten Gesicht – ein Glück, das fremd oder verstörend wirkt. Entscheidende Momente können uns reizen und herausfordern. Oft erkennen wir sie erst im Nachhinein.

Die Ausstellung OPPORTUNE MOMENT wird von den Künstlerinnen eröffnet und präsentiert bei der ASIFA Austria Reception / Cinema Aperitivo gehostet von Vienna Shorts und ASIFA Austria, im Vienna Shorts Festivalzentrum im Raum D / MuseumsQuartier, Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Wien, on May 30, 4:30 p.m.

Matea Kovačs Film Y gewann bei der Programmreihe Animation Avantgarde des Vienna Shorts Festival 2024 den Preis der Jury für den:die beste:n Newcomer:in und die damit verbundene Artist Residency im MuseumsQuartier Wien.
Jury statement: In diesem Film lädt uns die Künstlerin auf eine poetische wie sinnliche Reise ein, eine Geschichte, die mit zarten Linien und starker Stimme erzählt wird. Für die aufrichtigen und wunderschön gezeichneten Beobachtungen geht unser Preis der Jury für die beste Newcomerin an den Film Y von Matea Kovač.

Can you imagine an opportune moment? In Greek mythology, Kairos, the god of the opportune moment, symbolizes a chance — that brief cut in time when something can change. We’ll most likely imagine that moment as something positive. In this exhibition, two worlds — sculpture and drawing, mythology and intimacy — merge into one contemplation: What can an opportune moment truly represent?

In the animated film Y, Matea Kovač explores the intimate boundaries of relationships through a line — when the line stops connecting and begins to divide. Her Kairos is a moment of realization — that something must end in order to protect the self. What if the purpose of an opportune moment isn’t necessarily to create or preserve, but to decide that something can — and should — end? An opportune moment isn’t easy, but it’s crucial.
Ana Maria Maravić, through sculptures of Kairos with large feet for quick movement and mischievous, playful faces, portrays happiness in an unrecognizable form. Opportune moments sometimes play with us, tease us, and test our ability to notice them. We often recognize them as opportune only with the passage of time.
The exhibition will be opened and presented at CinemAperitivo, hosted by Vienna Shorts and ASIFA Austria, at Raum D / MuseumsQuartier, Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Wien, on May 30, 4:30 p.m.

Matea Kovač’s film Y won the Newcomer’s award at the Animation Avantgarde competition at the Vienna Shorts Festival 2024 and with it an Artist Residency at the MuseumsQuartier Vienna.
Jury statement: In this film the artist invites us to a poetic and sensual journey, a story told with delicate lines and a strong voice. For the genuine and beautifully drawn observations the jury prize for the best newcomer goes to the film Y by Matea Kovač.
